Women's Health Issues

Women in hospitality often manage demanding roles while coping with health conditions like endometriosis, adenomyosis, PCOS, thyroid disorders, PMDD/PMS and symptoms of perimenopause or menopause. These can affect energy, mood and day-to-day comfort, which can be challenging in fast-paced, physical environments.

This section offers clear signposting to trusted UK resources to help women access the support, information and understanding they need.

Endometriosis & Adenmyosis

Adenomyosis and endometriosis are chronic conditions where womb-like tissue grows where it shouldn’t, causing severe period pain, fatigue, heavy bleeding, and pelvic pain. They affect around 1 in 10 women in the UK and often take years to diagnose.

In hospitality, long shifts, physical work, and limited breaks can worsen symptoms. Ongoing stigma around menstrual health means many women don’t ask for support. Greater awareness and flexible, supportive workplaces can make a real difference.

Perimenopause/Menopause

Perimenopause and menopause are natural life stages where hormone changes can cause symptoms like hot flushes, poor sleep, mood changes, anxiety, brain fog, and joint pain. Symptoms vary widely, and many women in the UK feel unsupported or uninformed during this transition.

In hospitality, hot environments, long shifts, limited breaks, and high-pressure work can make symptoms harder to manage. Fatigue, disrupted sleep, and anxiety can also impact confidence in customer-facing roles. Simple workplace adjustments and open conversations can help women feel supported and continue thriving at work.

PCOS

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal condition that affects ovulation and periods. Symptoms can include irregular cycles, fatigue, weight changes, acne, excess hair growth, fertility issues, and mood changes. Around 1 in 10 women in the UK have PCOS, and many face delays in diagnosis or limited support.

In hospitality, long shifts, physical work, irregular hours, and stress can make symptoms harder to manage. Because PCOS isn’t always visible, many people struggle without asking for support. A more understanding and flexible workplace can help employees feel supported, valued, and able to perform at their best.

PMS and PMDD

PMS and PMDD are linked to hormonal changes in the menstrual cycle. PMS can cause bloating, fatigue, irritability and mood swings, while PMDD is a more severe form that can lead to intense mood changes, anxiety, low mood and difficulty concentrating. PMDD affects around 3–8% of women in the UK and can seriously impact daily life.

In hospitality, fast-paced, high-pressure and customer-facing work can make symptoms harder to manage. Long shifts, overstimulation and limited breaks can worsen both physical and emotional symptoms. A supportive workplace with awareness, flexibility and open conversation can help reduce stigma and improve wellbeing at work.

Thyroid Disorders

Thyroid disorders, including underactive and overactive thyroid, affect hormone levels that control energy and metabolism. Symptoms can include fatigue, weight changes, brain fog, anxiety, mood swings, temperature sensitivity and irregular periods. These conditions are common in women in the UK and can impact daily life if not well managed.

In hospitality, fast-paced and physically demanding work can make symptoms harder to cope with. Fatigue, brain fog, heat sensitivity or anxiety may be worsened in busy kitchens or customer-facing roles. With better awareness, open communication and supportive workplace practices, employees with thyroid conditions can feel understood, confident and able to perform at their best.
